Opuntia robusta is a species of plant in the genus of Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet robusta means 'strong, strong'. Spanish common names are "Bartolona," "Nopal camueso", "Nopal Tapón" and "Tuna Tapón".

description

Opuntia robusta grows shrubby to almost tree-like with many branches of up to 1.5 meters in length and heights of 1 to 3 meters. It forms more or less distinct stems. The round to elongated shoots are blue-green with frostbite. They are sturdy, thick, 20 to 25 inches long and 10 to 12.5 inches wide. The pointed, reddish leaves are up to 4 millimeters long. The slightly raised areoles of different sizes are 4 to 5.5 centimeters apart and have numerous yellowish to brownish glochids . The strong two to twelve thorns (which can occasionally be missing) are whitish, with a darker base and up to 5 centimeters long.

The yellow flowers reach a length of 5 to 7 centimeters and a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The spherical to ellipsoidal, dark red fruits are slightly tuberous and between 7 and 9 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia robusta is common in central Mexico. The first description was published in 1837 by Heinrich Ludolph Wendland . A synonym is Opuntia guerrana .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the population is seen as increasing.
