Opuntia sanguinea is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet sanguinea means '(Latin sanguineus) bloody, blood red'.

description

Opuntia sanguinea grows shrubby with numerous ascending to upright branches and forms dense thickets with heights of 2 to 3 meters. The broadly lanceolate to elliptical, not slightly sloping shoot sections are rounded at their tip and narrowed at the base. They are 14 to 19 inches long and 5.5 to 8 inches wide. The areoles are 2 to 2.5 centimeters apart. Their yellow glochids are 3 to 4.5 millimeters long. The one or two unequal, downwardly curved spines are brownish and 0.8 to 3.5 centimeters long.

The blood-red flowers reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia sanguinea is common in the Saint Thomas Parish of Jamaica .

The first description by George Richardson Proctor was published in 1982.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
