Opuntia subsphaerocarpa is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet subsphaerocarpa means '(lat. Subsphaerocarpus) with slightly spherical fruits'.

description

Opuntia subsphaerocarpa grows shrubby to almost tree-shaped and is densely branched. The glossy dark green, oval to somewhat elongated shoot sections are up to 20 centimeters long and up to 5.5 centimeters wide. The one or two whitish, 1.5 to 2 centimeters long thorns are often missing.

The yellow flowers reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The spherical fruits are red.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia subsphaerocarpa is common in the Argentine province of Misiones .

The first description by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1925.

Opuntia subsphaerocarpa is poorly known.
