Opuntia tehuacana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tehuacana indicates the site in the valley of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán.

Opuntia tehuacana grows shrubby with ascending or creeping twigs branching from the base and reaches heights of 40 to 80 centimeters. The green to yellowish green, bald, conspicuously humped, more or less circular to indicated obovate shoot sections are 20 to 29 centimeters long and 23 to 26 centimeters wide. The elliptical 2.8 to 4.3 millimeter long areoles are 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters apart and have 1 to 2 millimeter long glochids . The one to three (rarely up to seven) slightly awl, protruding, slightly twisted, whitish gray to yellow thorns turn gray with age and are 1 to 4 centimeters long.

The reddish yellow flowers reach a length of 3 to 4.2 centimeters. The obovate fruits are yellow and covered with glochids. They are 4.5 to 5 inches long and 2.8 to 3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia tehuacana is common in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Puebla in the valley of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán.

The first description by Salvador Arias Montes and Susana Gama López was published in 1997.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
