Opuntia viridirubra is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet viridirubra means '(Latin virides green and Latin rubra red) greenish red'.
description
Opuntia viridirubra grows as a shrub with several upright or spread branches and reaches heights of growth of 30 to 40 centimeters. The dark green elliptical shoot sections are 6 to 20 centimeters long, 2.5 to 4 centimeters wide and up to 1 centimeter thick. The white areoles on it are 1.5 to 3 centimeters apart. Their glochids are yellowish. The one to three needle-like thorns are brownish yellow and 2 to 4 inches long. The upper mandrel is protruding, the lower one bent downwards.
The lemon yellow flowers reach a length of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The pear-shaped, dark red fruits are up to 3.5 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia viridirubra is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .
The first description as Platyopuntia viridirubra was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter . Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira put the species in 1995 in the genus Opuntia . The following subspecies are distinguished:
