Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian Orange Blossom Special Johnny Cash Sings the Ballads of the True West

Orange Blossom Special is the 20th studio album by Johnny Cash . It was produced by Don Law and Frank Jones and was released on Columbia Records in March 1965 .

The song content ranges from features like the Orange Blossom Special to the dark story of a murder ( Long Black Veil ) or a convict ( The Wall ) to old traditionals like Danny Boy or Amen .

The title track of the album turned into a live highlight. Cash didn't want to hire a harmonica player to play a song , which is why he learned the instrument himself to the point that he could play it at Orange Blossom Special . At the end of each concert, he threw the used instrument into the audience.

Origin and chart placements

Cash met the young Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in July 1964, where Dylan offered him demos of his new songs, which he recorded for Another Side of Bob Dylan . Cash had sent Dylan a letter the previous year congratulating him on his album The Freewheelin ' . In the meantime, Dylan had been attacked by folk purists for “ selling himself to the industry and betraying the ideals of folk music ”. Cash defended Dylan in the folk magazine Broadside with the words: “ Shut up! ... and let him sing! "

Although many of his listeners had insulted Dylan as an “ungodly troublemaker” or as a communist , Cash decided to record the songs It Ain't me, Babe , Mama, You've Been on My Mind and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right to record for his new album, as he was convinced of Dylan's lyrical talent and saw in him the successor of Hank Williams or Woody Guthrie . It Ain't Me, Babe was recorded in a duet with June Carter and later reappeared on the 1967 album Carryin 'on With Johnny Cash and June Carter .

Orange Blossom Special reached # 3 on the country albums chart and # 49 on the pop charts. The singles It Ain't Me, Babe and Orange Blossom Special reached number four and three respectively on the country singles charts .
