Matthias Jendis

Matthias Jendis (born May 5, 1959 in Rotenburg (Wümme) , † January 22, 2009 in Göttingen ) was a German literary translator .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1978, Matthias Jendis did two years of military service as a temporary soldier (radio operator) on a ship of the German Navy. Between 1978 and 1998 he was in Israel ten times (two kibbutzim in the Negev desert). He completed his studies in English Philology, Ancient History and Medieval and Modern History at the Georg-August University in Göttingen with a Magister Artium and the first state examination for teaching at a grammar school. From 1990 to 1995 he worked as a research assistant at the English Department of the University of Göttingen. From 1993 to 1996 he worked on a dissertation on Victorian literature ("The Unfinished"). Since the end of 1996 he has worked exclusively as a literary translator. For his new translation Moby-Dick or Der Wal , 2001, he was awarded the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize for translations of Anglo-Saxon literature and the Nicolas Born Prize 2002, which was the first time that a translator was awarded. He was friends with the Australian author Elliot Perlman , whose novel Seven Pages of Truth (2005; German 2008) he had translated. He lived in Göttingen.
