Melanie Walz (* 1953 in Essen ) is a German literary translator .

Life

Melanie Walz studied pedagogy , psychology and sociology at the University of Munich . From 1979 to 1984 she worked for the magazine Filmkritik and from 1988 to 1999 as a publishing editor for Paul List Verlag in Munich . She has been translating fiction from English and French into German since the 1980s .

Melanie Walz received the Zug translator scholarship in 1999 for her translation of John Cowper Powy's novel The Beach of Weymouth , the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize in 2001 , in particular for her translations of works by the writer AS Byatt, and a literature scholarship from the City of Munich in 2005 for her translation of posthumous texts by Marcel Proust. In 2015 she was awarded the translator award of the City of Munich . For her translation of the novel Middlemarch by George Eliot , Walz was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2020
