Orchestes avellanae is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).
features
The beetles have a body length of 2.4 to 2.7 mm. They have a black basic color. The front half of the elytra is predominantly covered with white hairs. Furthermore, a white transverse band runs in the rear third of the wing covers. The antennae , tibia and tarsi are yellow-brown. The outer edge of the furrow on the underside of the posterior femora has a number of receding teeth.
distribution
The beetle species occurs in large parts of Europe. It occurs in Central Europe, Norway, France, England, Italy and the Eastern Balkans as well as the Middle East .
Way of life
The beetles can be seen from April to September. They are found on oaks , particularly Portuguese oak ( Quercus faginea ), holm oak ( Quercus ilex ) and English oak ( Quercus robur ). After wintering, the females lay their eggs on oak leaves. The larvae form a mine . Larval development usually lasts from April to May. The light yellow larvae leave the mine and pupate on the ground. Then the adults of the new generation appear. The beetle species was associated with the common hazel ( Corylus avellana ) in the past and owes the Artepitethon avellanae to this fact .
