Order of San Jorge de Alfama

The Order of San Jorge de Alfama was an Aragonese knightly order .

In 1201 Peter II of Aragon founded the Order of San Jorge de Alfama in Alfama in honor of St. George . The first members came from the ranks of the Order of Calatrava . The order received goods from the Knights Templar and the Crown of Aragon. The order was not recognized by the Holy See until 1363.

Life in the order was organized according to the rules of Augustine of Hippo . The order recaptured the cities of Ademus and Castellfabib from the Moors of Valencia . Under Alfonso VIII of Castile , the order took part in the attack on the Balearic Islands and also took part in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa . With the recognition by Pope Benedict XIII. he was united in 1400 with the Order of Montesa . The new order was now called the Order of Montesa and San Jorge de Alfama.
