Order of Monreal del Campo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of Monreal del Campo , also Order of San Salvador de Monreal , was an order of knights in the Kingdom of Aragon in the 12th century. It was donated by King Alfonso I of Aragón around 1124 and only existed for a few years.

history

King Alfonso I of Aragón founded the order of knights around 1124 with the aim of fighting the Muslims on the border of Aragon and keeping the sea route to the Holy Land free. He acted on the advice of Count Gaston IV of Béarn .

At the same time, King Alfonso founded a new city, which he named Monreal del Campo (today in the province of Teruel ). The city should become the seat of the new order. Furthermore, King Alfonso transferred rich property to the order and gave its members generous privileges. The order included important nobles as well as the Archbishop of Auch and the Abbot of San Juan de la Peña . With the first momentum, the new order carried out a military campaign in the area of Valencia .

But the order only existed for a few years. Since the order was no longer considered in the will of King Alfonso, who died in 1134, it can be assumed that the order had already been dissolved or merged into the Knights Templar at that time .
