The list of Japanese railway companies contains a list of the railway companies active in Japan in 2017 . Former companies are not included in this list.

Japan Railways Group

The Japan Railways Group - also known as the JR Group ( JR グ ル ー プ ) - comprises seven companies that were formed in 1987 after the privatization of the Japanese State Railways ( 日本 国有 鉄 道 , Nihon Kokuyū Tetsudō ).
