The Tenryū Hamanako Tetsudo ( Jap . 天竜浜名湖鉄道株式会社 , Tenryū Hamanako Tetsudo Kabushiki-gaisha , Engl. Tenryū Hamanako Railroad Co., Ltd. ), short Tenhama ( 天浜 called), is a Japanese railway company . The Hamamatsu- based company operates a railway line in Shizuoka Prefecture .
Companies
The company operates the Tenryū-Hamanako Line , a 67.7 km long railway line from Kakegawa via Tenryū-Futamata to Shinjohara . It opens up the northern boroughs of Hamamatsu; it is named after the Tenryū River and Lake Hamana . As a so-called " third-sector rail company ", Tenryū Hamanako Tetsudō is a cooperation between the public sector and private investors. The main shareholders are Shizuoka Prefecture (39.7%) and the cities of Hamamatsu (19.5%), Kakegawa (7.6%) and Kosai (5.2%).
history
In June 1984 the Ministry of Transportation published a restructuring plan for the highly indebted Japanese State Railways . Among other things, he planned to shut down the Futamata line ( 二 俣 線 , Futamata-sen ) from Kakegawa to Shinjohara , which was completed in 1940, in the medium term due to insufficient profitability. There was resistance to this measure in the affected region. Under the leadership of Shizuoka Prefecture and the City of Hamamatsu, Tenryū Hamanako Tetsudō was founded on August 18, 1986. This took over on March 15, 1987, two weeks before the state railway privatization, the railway line and renamed it Tenryū Hamanako Line.
In 2003, Tenryū Hamanako Tetsudō took over a Rapid River system for boat trips on the Tenryū that had existed since 1948 . A serious accident on August 17, 2011 left five dead, whereupon operations had to be permanently shut down. An absolutely necessary modernization of the system would have burdened the railway company's budget too much and private companies showed no interest either.
