geography

In the area of the city of Okaya, the Tenryū has its source as the only outflow from Lake Suwa. From the district town of Tatsuno in the district of Kamiina it flows through the Ina Basin , for the formation of which it is responsible from a geomorphological point of view. After flowing through part of Aichi Prefecture, it flows further through Shizuoka Prefecture and flows into the Pacific Ocean on the border of the cities of Hamamatsu and Iwata . Due to the unpredictability of the Tenryū, the banks are protected with dikes. The Tenryū has also been called the “angry river” ( abare-gawa ) since ancient times .
