List of railroad companies in the United States

The list of railroad companies in the United States provides an overview of railroad companies that provide freight, passenger, and tourist services.

In 2017, there were 614 public railroad companies operating goods transportation in the United States . According to the classification of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) as of December 31, 2009 there were 7 Class 1 companies, 23 Regional Railroads , 339 Local Railroads , 194 shunting companies and two Canadian companies (CN and CP).

Class 1 - Railway companies

Railways with sales exceeding $ 401.4 million

Regional Railroads (Class 2)

A railroad company that operates more than 350 miles and / or has more than $ 40 million in revenue.

Local Railroads (Class 3)

no "Class 1" or "Class 2" railways, but with scheduled operation

Shunting companies

Railways that do not carry out point-to-point transports (regular services), but rather establish the connection between end customers and the other railway companies.
