The Toyama tram ( Japanese 富山 市 電 , Toyama-shiden ) is the tram network in Toyama on the island of Honshū in Japan . Contrary to the Japanese name, the company is not under municipal administration, but has been carried out by the private company Toyama Chihō Tetsudō KK ( 富山 地方 鉄 道 ), or Chitetsu ( 地 鉄 ) for short , since 1943 .

It essentially consists of two branches starting from the main train station; one leads west around the city center to the university in the west ( 大学 前 , Daiguku-mae ), the other leads east around and further south to the south station ( 南 富山 駅 , Minami-Toyama-eki). Both are connected by a single-track line in the southern city center, which is served counterclockwise by line 3 as a ring line. Line 2 serves both branches completely, while line 1 only runs between the main and south stations. There is a transition to the suburban railway lines of the same company.

In the opening year 1913, the inner city ring and part of the south branch were laid out. Two years later, the southern station was reached and in 1916 the western branch was built, which, however, was located further south in the center until 1952 and was shortened several times at the western end until 1969. Starting from the central station Nishichō ( 西 町 ) an east branch with a north branch (connected to the northern part of the ring from 1936) was created in 1928 and expanded in 1961; the northern part was closed in 1972 and the rest in 1984. The ring only got its current route during river regulation work in the northern area in the 1930s, while the southern area was first rebuilt in a different location after being destroyed in the war, decommissioned in 1973 and rebuilt in its original location in 2009. The last expansion took place in 2015 with the creation of a north branch with a stump end point in the main station, which is to be connected with the light rail line in the north in the coming years . A planned expansion in the area of ​​the university has not yet got beyond the discussion stage.

In addition, there existed between 1950 and 1961 or 1967 through-tied lines on the railroad lines of the same company in the west via the former Shin-Toyama station ( 新 富山 ) to Takaoka and in the south to Sasazu ( 笹 津 ).

The fleet comprises 16 high-floor single cars as well as three two-part and two three-part low-floor articulated multiple units, which have been specially procured for the ring line by Niigata-Transys and Alna-Sharyō since 2009. Their first series corresponds to the vehicles used on the light rail route.
