Ulrich Dausien

Ulrich Dausien (born July 22, 1957 in Hanau , Hessen ) is a German company founder and company leader in the outdoor sports goods industry . In 1981 Ulrich Dausien founded the Jack Wolfskin brand . In 2001 he became a board member of YEAH! AG .

Life

Ulrich Dausien was born as the son of Margret and Werner Dausien, a family of booksellers from Hanau am Main. His childhood and youth were shaped by membership in the boy scouts and in the rock band Octopus.

After graduating from high school, Dausien began studying business administration at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1976 . During a temporary job at the IWA hunting fair in Nuremberg , he met a Taiwanese backpack and sleeping bag exporter in 1977 . The colorful backpacks and tents exhibited at the IWA were unsuitable for hunting, but not for people with an affinity for nature or hiking. His business idea arose from this knowledge .

In the same year his first company for the import of hiking and travel equipment was founded in Frankfurt . By selling off the first products from Taiwan , he opened a small outdoor clothing and equipment store called "SINE" in 1979. SINE was his boy scout nickname with the Heliand scouting body . In 1979 the first own brand followed, HOBBYT. In 1981 the company's own label was expanded to become an independent company, HOBBYT-gear for Draussen GmbH in Frankfurt.

By 1987, twelve more SINE outdoor specialist shops had opened nationwide in the franchise system .

While on a trip to Alaska in 1981, Dausien was injured in the eye by a bear . A scar above the left eye is evidence of this event to this day. In the search for a suitable brand name for the products of the newly created label, the bear paw was changed to a wolf paw, then wolf skin “Wolfskin” and this in turn was supplemented by the addition “Jack”, which originally stood for the American writer Jack London . From 1981 the brand name Jack Wolfskin was used.

In 1981 Dausien developed the double jacket, which helped the Jack Wolfskin brand to achieve global success. With the integration of a second zip , the inner and outer jacket could be worn separately and the outerwear could be adapted to the prevailing climatic conditions.

In 1986 he dropped out of business administration to meet the growing demands of the business.

The growing sales with Jack Wolfskin made Dausien a decision a few years after it was founded. The increased demand required investments that could no longer be achieved on our own. In 1991 it was sold to the Johnson Worldwide Associates Group (JWA Group) from the USA . According to the Handelsblatt Dausien received for the sale of Jack Wolfskin 15 million German marks . In the same year he moved to the management of the JWA Group, where he was primarily responsible for the Jack Wolfskin brand. In 1994 Dausien left the JWA Group and withdrew into private life until 1995.

In 2001 Ulrich Dausien moved from the supervisory board of Bicyclesräder AG in Bielefeld, to which he had previously been a member for eight years, to the management board. At the same time as of January 1, 2001, SINE GmbH, Our Planet GmbH and McTrek GmbH were integrated into YEAH! AG. As a result of the merger of these companies with Bicyclesräder AG to form YEAH! AG, however, suffered heavy losses in the YEAH! AG, which could be traced back to the very sluggish business of Bicyclesräder AG. In order to reorganize the ailing business, he turned the focus back to outdoor retail.
