The hairy tumbler beetle ( Orectochilus villosus ) is a species of beetle from the family of tumbler beetles (Gyrinidae). It is the only representative of its genus in Europe.

features

The beetles reach a body length of 5.5 to 6.5 millimeters. Their elliptical, arched and narrow body is colored glossy black and has fine gray hairs. The pronotum is conical, the wings elongated ovoid. The mouthparts , antennae and legs are rust-colored like the underside of the body. The scutellum is smooth.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed in Europe, North Africa, Syria, the Caucasus , Siberia and as far as China. It is not uncommon in Central Europe and also common locally. The animals live in streams with strong currents under stones and can also be found on weirs. They are nocturnal and hide during the day.
