The small sailfin barbel ( Oreichhys parvus , syn .: Puntius roloffi ) or Roloffs dwarf barbel is a small freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). The species occurs on the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia , as well as in the Mekong basin in Laos and Thailand.

features

The small sailfin barb has a barbel-typical shape, is slightly high-backed and becomes three centimeters long. The head is provided with numerous striking rows of pores . The sideline is short and only extends over 4 to 6 pored scales. The pharyngeal teeth stand in three rows, all of which are slightly raised at the top. Barbels are absent.

The head and body are silvery, often shiny gold, the top is green-gray. The scales on the back and on the sides of the body are darkly colored at their base, which leads to a reticulated, dark pattern. The caudal fin base is marked by a dark spot, more, sickle-shaped ones are at the tip of the dorsal fin and on the anal fin. The pelvic fins can be more or less reddish, depending on the mood, while the dorsal and anal fins are more yellowish.

Way of life

The little sailfin barbel lives in clear, slowly flowing mountain streams. The fish are territorial and occupy small areas . The females lay their 50 to 70 adherent eggs like harlequin harlequin on the underside of large-leaved aquatic plants. The juvenile fish hatch after 24 hours at a water temperature, initially hang on water plants and swim freely after another five days.
