Terellia tussilaginis is a fly from the family of bored flies (Tephritidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 5.0 to 6.5 millimeters. Their body has a yellowish base color. The mesonotum is yellow and has rust-colored longitudinal stripes, dark behind. The pleuras are unstripe, the legs also yellow. The wings have four yellow, brown-edged cross bars. Occasionally four rows of black dot spots can be seen on the abdomen. The antennae are deflected above the middle of the eyes, the forehead is flat.
The sex of the drill fly is easy to find out. While males have a rounded abdomen, females can be recognized by their reddish-brown ovens, which become darker towards the rear.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals are widespread in Europe. The adults can be found in July on the larvae feeding plants. These are mainly burdock ( Arctium ), occasionally thistles and knapweeds ( Centaurea ). The larvae live in the flower heads of the plants.
