Oreophryne variabilis is a species of amphibian from the subfamily of the Papuan narrow-mouth frogs (Asterophryinae).

features

The species reaches a length of 28 millimeters. The animals are very varied in color. The top of the body is gray, brown, purple, rose or crimson and monochrome or marbled or there are light yellow or pink lateral stripes. Sometimes there is a light longitudinal line in the middle of the back. There may also be a dark, light-edged eye spot in the lumbar region. The head sides are dark brown. The underside of the body is monochrome whitish, gray or dark brown with yellow spots. The front head is short and rounded. The canthus rostralis is weakly indicated. The interorbital space is wider than an upper eyelid. The eardrum is only slightly recognizable and two thirds to three quarters the size of an eye. The first finger is shorter than the second. The adhesive discs on the fingertips are very large and much larger than those on the short, free toes. Subarticular cusps and metatarsal cusps are absent. With the hind leg placed against the body, the tibiotarsal joint extends to the shoulder or the eardrum. The skin is smooth on the upper side of the body, but grained on the belly.

Occurrence

Oreophryne variabilis occurs in the south of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Mount Bonthain and Mount Latimojong above 1000 meters and on Gunung Karua above 1200 meters. Their habitat are undisturbed forests.
