Johann Jacob Maurer (also Johann Jakob Maurer) (born January 15, 1737 in Schaffhausen , † August 30 or August 31, 1780 in Utrecht , Netherlands ) was a Swiss-Dutch painter .

Life

Maurer was probably born on January 15, 1737 as the ninth child of the saddler Hans Caspar Maurer and Anna Margaretha born. Trippel was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He moved to the Netherlands by ship in 1753; On the way the passenger steamer had been stopped by a French soldier outpost with the intention of looting it. However, Maurer, who could speak French, managed to settle the matter peacefully. He settled in Amsterdam , where he obtained citizenship on October 25, 1764. Here he first worked as a plasterer . With Schaffhausen, however, he seems to have maintained at least loose contacts: In any case, on January 30, 1757, the twenty-year-old was duly accepted into the traditional fishermen's guild - and without any special reference to his absence; In addition, until 1770 he owned a property in fishermen's houses, the so-called "gypsum house". He made great progress in Amsterdam at the art academy, where he had registered, and trained the Swiss Johann Heinrich Wüest , among others . In 1762 he had worked his way up to a "member of the first class" and became a teacher at the newly founded art academy in Utrecht, where he had taken up residence. From 1770 until his death in 1780 he also held the position of director or head of the department. In 1769 he was also employed as a teacher at the orphan school of the Foundation Fundatie van Renswoude .

family

Maurer had married Johanna Brevé from Rotterdam on October 30, 1767 . With her he had three sons and three daughters. Johann Heinrich Wüest adopted one of the sons who died as a bricklayer in 1780. He wanted to train him as an artist, but the child died after 18 months.

Maurer created many landscape paintings in the style of Dutch landscape painting , including in the Amsterdam canal belt . According to encyclopedias, his paintings are “similar”, his style “flat, but praiseworthy coloring” and his character “lovable”.

Few of Maurer's works are known today. A portrait made by him is in the Centraal Museum Utrecht , another in the town hall of Franeker . A portrait of the Society of Patron Jacobs (on which he himself is trained) is exhibited in Petworth , England. An altar painting in the church in Laren was also made by Maurer .
