Orhan Karaveli (born February 25, 1930 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish journalist and author.

Life

Orhan Karavelis family comes from the Oghuz tribe of Karaevli . He was born in 1930 in Ankara as the son of Mahmut and his wife Rafia. From 1936 he attended the İstiklal primary school, but switched to the Galatasaray primary school in Istanbul the following year . After elementary school he moved to Galatasaray High School , which he graduated in 1949. He then began studying law at Istanbul University . He had to interrupt this to do his military service with the air defense. Then he was able to continue his studies and also studied for a year at the University of Westminster . In 1954 he successfully completed his studies.

Karaveli began his journalistic career during his studies. His first article appeared in Her Hafta in 1948 . It was a report about a hermit on Uludağ near Bursa. Between 1950 and 1954 he wrote for the daily Yeni Istanbul . During this time he also supported his brother Nihat Karaveli in the publication of the sexual hygiene magazine Cinsi Bilgiler Mecmuası , which was published for 60 months from April 1949. In 1955 he reported for three years as a correspondent for the daily Milliyet from Berlin and London . While he was living in London, he regularly flew to Cyprus to report from there.

After returning to Turkey, he wrote about Turkey as a correspondent for the News Chronicle , and later wrote for the former daily Vatan . In 1959 she sent him to the United States for two and a half months. Here he spent a lot of time with the American historian and biographer John A. Garraty , with whom he was friends. He also accompanied the Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes on his visits to the USA. Karaveli traveled a lot during these years. He visited Cuba shortly after the communist revolution. In 1960 he traveled to the Soviet Union and interviewed Nazım Hikmet there . The following year he traveled to Yugoslavia and watched a conference of the Non-Aligned Movement . He interviewed Jawaharlal Nehru and Josip Broz Tito . In the 1960s, his father suffered a heart attack and Orhan Karaveli took over the family's mining business. After the reorganization of the company, he returned to journalism and worked for the daily Cumhuriyet as a reporter and columnist. In 1977 and 1998 he received the Turkish Journalists' Association Award.

Orhan Karaveli is married to Serpil Karaveli. The couple have two sons and a daughter.
