The ornithopoda ( latinization from ancient Greek ὄρνις órnis 'bird' and πούς pous 'foot'; literally therefore "bird-feet", "bird's foot dinosaur ") were bipede , secondarily also quadruple , non-armored, herbivorous dinosaurs from the group of bird-pelvis dinosaurs ) (ornithopods). The ornithopods include the well-known families of the Iguanodontidae and the Hadrosauridae . In addition to the Ceratopsia , the ornithopods were the only sub-order of the dinosaurs that could chew their food and thus not only use gastroliths (stomach stones) to chop up food. They were spread worldwide and appear from the early Jurassic in the fossil record .

Internal system

The Ornithopoda are divided into the small Heterodontosauridae and the Euornithopoda, both taxa are considered monophyletic . The Euornithopoda were divided into the Hypsilophodontidae and the Iguanodontia . The Hypsilophodontidae are now considered paraphyletic . The known hadrosaurs are a subgroup of the Iguanodontia.
