Ortenauer plum

Ortenauer Zwetschge (mostly just "Ortenauer" for short; especially in Northern Germany also Borssumer ) is an old plum variety that emerged as a chance seedling - it was first mentioned at the end of the 17th century in the village of Borssum (today a district of Emden ). After the Second World War , the variety was brought to southern Germany and Ortenau (on the Upper Rhine) - where it received the name that is common today.

The variety is still used commercially in Germany because it has a good yield and the fruits are easy to transport. Due to the high susceptibility to sharka (an infestation leads to the death of the entire plant), however, their cultivation is declining.

The medium-sized fruits ripen late - around the end of August / beginning of September, are elongated-oval and dark blue and frosted when ripe. The flesh is firm, juicy, green-yellow to yellow in color and easily removes seeds, although the aroma is often not very pronounced.

Others

The crossing of Ortenauer Zwetschge and Stanley Zwetschge resulted in Jojo - the first plum variety resistant to shark.
