Orthocephalus saltator is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.5 to 5.6 millimeters (males) or 3.5 to 5.0 millimeters long (females). The species of the genus Orthocephalus are very dark in color and their physique is rather stocky and adapted to jumping. The feelers are completely black. Orthocephalus saltator can be distinguished from the similar species Orthocephalus coriaceus by the brownish instead of black splints ( tibia ) of the hind legs. Males are usually fully winged (macropter), females have shortened (brachyptere) hemielytres .

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe and North Africa, east to the Caspian region. It was introduced into North America by humans. In Germany and Austria it is widespread and usually frequent and also occurs in the higher altitudes of the Alps. Above all, dry and warm places are settled.

Way of life

The bugs live on composite flowers (Asteraceae), often of mouse-ear hawkweed ( Hieracium pilosella ) and sometimes also occur together with Orthocephalus coriaceus on. The flying males can be attracted by artificial light sources at night. Like Orthocephalus coriaceus , adult bedbugs can be observed from the beginning of June to the end of August, sometimes even until the beginning of September.
