Orthops kalmii is a soft bug (Miridae) in the subordination of the bugs (Heteroptera). The insect lives on umbellifers (Apiaceae).

Distribution and habitats

The bug species occurs throughout Europe, Siberia and western North Africa. It is distributed over Asia Minor to the Caucasus . It is common and widespread everywhere in Germany and Austria.

The adult bedbugs as well as their larvae live on different umbelliferae without a recognizable preference for certain genera of this plant family. The animals inhabit open and warm as well as shady and moist habitats . In contrast to the similar Orthops basalis , O. kalmii should prefer higher humidity values in its habitat.

Features and way of life

The elongated-oval insects reach body lengths between 3.9 and 5 millimeters. The animals are colored variably. They are light yellow to green with brownish to black markings on the hemi -layers ( hemielytras ). The animals are always long-winged (macropter). The head is usually uniformly dark in color. In contrast to the similar Orthops campestris , the outer edge of the Corium is not brightly colored, but narrowly black. The splints ( tibiae ) are light-colored. The front splints have light thorns, the rear splints dark thorns.

The animals feed exclusively on plants ( phytophag ). They are mostly found in the area of the inflorescences, mostly on the stems below the individual flowers. There they suckle the immature seeds of the plants. The eggs are laid in spring on the young leaves of the host plants. The young, green larvae appear from May, the first adult bedbugs of the new generation appear from June or July. The adults can be found until autumn. They overwinter in the adult stage in the litter or under the bark of deciduous and coniferous trees.
