Orthops campestris is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 3.6 to 4.5 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthops have dark antennae . Sometimes they cannot be determined with certainty from external characteristics. Orthops campestris is usually green in color or has a green tinge. The smallest species of the genus also has the most oval shape. Their antennae are short, the third segment is much shorter than the width of the head.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe and North Africa, east to Siberia and Central Asia. It is widespread in Germany and Austria and can be common in some places. Sunny, warm, open habitats with varying degrees of humidity are populated.
Way of life
The bugs live on umbellifers (Apiaceae). They particularly suckle on parsnips ( Pastinaca ), angelica ( Angelica ), hogweed ( Heracleum ), groundgrass ( Aegopodium ), carrots ( Daucus ), chervil ( Anthriscus ), beavers ( Pimpinella ) and dill ( Anethum ). They can also be found in gardens on lovage ( Levisticum officinale ). The wintering takes place as an imago . It can also take place on conifers ( spruce trees ). The females pierce their eggs into the leaves and buds of the sprouting plants. Like Orthops basalis , the nymphs appear from May, the adult bugs from June or July and can be observed on the plants until October and November.
