The Bibernellen ( Pimpinella ), also called Pimpernellen or Pimpinellen , are a genus of plants in the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). The 150 or so species are mainly found in Eurasia and Africa . The economically most important species of the genus is the anise .

Identical names

The as culinary herb used Small burnet ( Sanguisorba minor ) is also often called burnet or salad burnet, but is a kind in the family of the rose family (Rosaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Bibernelle are perennial , rare annual herbaceous plants . The basal leaves are undivided or simply pinnate. The leaflets are toothed and sometimes deeply cut.

Generative characteristics

The flowers have a double flower envelope . The indistinct calyx rim is outlined. The white, red and, more rarely, yellow petals are obovate. The stylus ends in an almost cephalic scar .

The fruit is an egg-round split fruit that is contracted on the side . The core mass, which is fairly flat on the contact surface, is arched like a hump, the free fruit holder ( carpophor ) has two columns.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Pimpinella was established by Carl von Linné .

The 150 or so species are mainly found in Eurasia and Africa . About 16 species occur in Europe.
