Orthops basalis

Orthops basalis is a type of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.0 to 5.2 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthops have dark antennae . Sometimes they cannot be determined with certainty from external characteristics. Orthops basalis is never green in color or tinge like Orthops campestris . It is larger and has a more elongated, often more darkly patterned body. The males often have three pale spots on the scutellum . The species can be distinguished from the very similar species Orthops kalmii on the basis of the third antennae, which is quite long and only slightly shorter than the width of the head. The nymphs are green.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe and western North Africa as well as east to Siberia and Central Asia. It may have been introduced into North America by humans, but it may be a similar species. It is widespread and common in Germany and Austria. Since the species can easily be confused with Orthops kalmii , older records are mostly uncertain. Open, dry, warm as well as moist, shady habitats are settled.

Way of life

The bugs live on different umbelliferae (Apiaceae) and show no specialization in certain genera. Both the nymphs and the adult bugs often sit on the flowers, especially on the stems directly below the individual flowers. There they suckle on the immature reproductive organs. The females lay their eggs in spring on young leaves of their host plants. The nymphs appear from May, the adult bugs from June or July and can be observed on the plants until October and November. They overwinter in the litter or under the bark scales of deciduous and coniferous trees.
