The Orthsee is located about 17 kilometers northwest of Waren (Müritz) in the west of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The approximately 2300 meters long and up to 500 meters wide body of water is a lake in the upper reaches of the fog . It emerged from the Frankfurt advance of the Vistula Ice Age.

The elongated lake has several bays. The place Hohen Wangelin is located at the outflow of the fog in the west, which reaches the lake in the south.

The lake and its surroundings are part of the FFH area Nebeltal with tributaries, connected lakes and adjacent forests .
