Oscar Han

Oscar Han (born December 3, 1891 in Bucharest , † February 17, 1976 ibid) was a Romanian author and sculptor.

life and work

Oscar Han studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest with Dimitrie Paciurea and Frederic Storck . His style is considered strong and dynamic. He had various group and solo exhibitions in Bucharest, but also exhibited in an international context; or in Venice, Paris, The Hague, Amsterdam and Barcelona. Together with other artists such as Camil Ressu , Nicolae Dărăscu , Ștefan Dimitrescu , Iosif Iser , Marius Bunescu , Dimitrie Paciurea, Cornel Medrea and Ion Jalea , he founded the artists' association Arta Română (" Romanian Art ") in Iași in 1917 . Since 1926 Han was with the painters Nicolae Tonitza , Francisc Șirato and Ștefan Dimitrescu a member of the Romanian artist group Grupul celor patru (in German: " Group of Four "), a protest group famous in Romania against the rigid norms of rigid academic art terms. On January 1, 1927, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Here he encouraged the young artists to be more courageous, to break new ground, to create their own style.

As an author he has published several monographs, especially on his teacher Dimitrie Paciurea; In addition, various articles on art historical and art theoretical aspects.

Han died in Bucharest on February 17, 1976 at the age of 84.

In Romania he is still regarded today as one of the country's leading sculptors. Many of his works are exhibited in the country. Occasionally some can also be seen at international exhibitions.
