Songs without words

Jacobsson started out as a political cartoonist, his first newspaper illustrations appeared in 1918. In 1920 he was asked to draw comic strips for the well-known Swedish newspaper Söndags-Nisse . The result was “Adamson”, the character of a small, cigar-smoking man who struggles with everyday pitfalls. Cartoons with this almost always silent figure subsequently achieved great popularity, not only in Europe, but also in the USA, China and Japan (in English-speaking countries also under the name "Silent Sam").

Jacobsson also provided illustrations for magazines and journals such as Exlex, Dagens Nyheter and Lutfisken. Towards the end of his career he developed another comic figure, "Abu Fakir". In addition to his work as a cartoonist, Jacobsson also worked as a painter.

In 1965 the Swedish Academy of Comic Art (SACA) established the "Adamson Award" in honor of Jacobsson, which is presented annually to a Swedish and an international comic artist.
