Oscar Kramer

Oscar Kramer (* 1835 in Vienna ; † April 9, 1892 there ; also Oskar Kramer ) was an Austrian photographer, photo dealer, photo publisher and art dealer.

Life

Oscar Kramer lived in Berlin for some time, attended the French grammar school there and studied chemistry and philosophy. However, he broke off his studies. In the mid-1850s he returned to Vienna, where he worked as a businessman. In 1856 he opened a specialist shop for photography and photographic articles on Rotenturmstrasse in Vienna. In the mid-1860s he moved to Graben , then to Kohlmarkt . At this point in time he had the job title "kk österr. Uk bair. Court art dealer, owner of a blueprint institute ”.

Kramer was in 1861 a member of the "Photographic Society in Vienna," in 1864 founded together with Ludwig cabinet the photographic correspondence and was in 1889 a member of the club of amateur photographers.

In 1865 he published a school of photography , in 1882 he celebrated his 25th business anniversary. Kramer was one of the pioneers of photography, true to the statement made in the editorial of the first issue of Photographische Correspondenz : "The near future of photography will be its dissemination among all classes".

In the years 1886 and 1892 he also worked as a “commercial judge valuer”.

He was co-founder and commercial director of the Vienna Photographers Association . This society was founded on the occasion of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 and was granted the concession to capture the world exhibition in images. About 2,200 photographs were taken and published in the “General Catalog of the Vienna Photographers Association”. The company was dissolved again in 1874 because the financial expectations were not met. To this day, the name Oscar Kramer is associated with this photo collection, which is now largely stored in the archive of the Technical Museum .

In 1887 he was appointed to the Imperial Council. He was considered a leading photo dealer and photo publisher, selling photos by numerous domestic and foreign photographers and presenting them at exhibitions.

Another collection relates to the regulation of the Danube in Vienna and the construction of bridges on the Danube in the various stages of construction.

Awards

  • Merit medal for utensils and graphic publisher on the occasion of the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna (photography department).
  • The Golden Cross of Merit with Crown on the occasion of participating in the international world exhibition in Vienna and contributing to the successes in 1873 .
