Oscar Rex

Oscar Rex , spelling of the first name also Oskar (born March 26, 1857 in Graz , † February 8, 1929 in Prague ) was an Austrian genre painter .

Life

Oscar Rex grew up in his hometown of Prague. From 1876 to 1877 he was a member of the Corps Austria and from around 1889 of the Corps Palaio-Austria in Prague.

In January 1878 he went to Munich to study at the Academy of Fine Arts . From 1881 he was then a student in Paris with Mihály von Munkácsy (still 1886), Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre . He returned to Prague around 1890.

In 1889 he took part in an exhibition of the Munich artists' cooperative. In 1891 a drawing by him was shown at the annual exhibition of visual artists in Vienna. At the Paris World Exposition in 1900 the work was honored by him with a bronze medal. Rex became famous shortly before the First World War , when a cycle of over 30 paintings he had created with scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte was shown in 38 cities.

Rex came from a medical family. His grandfather was the surgeon Franz Rex (1795–1855), who came from Brno and practiced in Prague. Oscar Rex was born the son of the chief medical officer and head of the Prague garrison hospital Ignaz Rex (1822-after 1900) and his wife Emma Schulz (1832-1884). Oscar's brother was the medicine professor Hugo Rex . Oscar Rex was married to Marie Eudes (* 1860) for the first time and after her death to Nora Thébauet (* 1867) from Paris.
