The striker began his career with River Plate Montevideo in 1968 . About the stopover in 1971 with the Montevidean city rival Peñarol , with whom he took part in the Copa Libertadores that year , his path took him to Ecuador in 1972 . Here the mundialista called Zubía, partly together with his compatriots Eliseo Álvarez and Héctor Silva , played for LDU Quito for seven years . After the club played under-class after relegation, Liga de Quito took fifth place in the promotion tournament in 1973 and thus missed promotion by one rank, since according to the regulations only four teams from Pichincha were allowed to rise. In 1974, Zubía, who was initially used in the center forward position, played with his team in the Segunda Categoría until the middle of the year . Then Liga de Quito rose and became Ecuadorian champions in the same year. The following year the championship triumph was repeated when they prevailed in the final against El Nacional . With the commitment of Juan José Pérez , Zubiás changed position on the field, because he now took the right attacking part, while his counterpart on the left was Gustavo Tapia . Zubía also took part in the Copa Simón Bolívar with his club . He finally had to end his career in 1978 due to a meniscus operation. After that, however, he stayed in Ecuador until his further career took him temporarily to the USA in 2000 due to work . In 2008 he returned to Ecuador.

National team

For the Uruguayan national team, he completed 15 international matches from his debut on May 28, 1968 to his last appearance on February 10, 1971, in which his personal hit statistics showed four goals. During this period he took with Celeste at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in part and has been used in the course of the tournament in the two group matches against national teams from Sweden and Italy.

Trainer

After his career as an active player, he also worked as a coach. In this role he was in charge of LDU Quito from 1997 to 1998 .
