Eliseo Álvarez (born July 27, 1940 or August 9, 1940 in Salto , † 1997 footnote 1 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player .
Player career
society
The 1.68 meter tall defensive player Álvarez, who was in the ranks of the Ferrocarrils club in his hometown in his youth, was part of the squad of the Montevidean club Nacional in the Primera División from 1957 to 1965 . With the Bolsos he won the national championship title in 1963. In 1964 he took part in the finals of the Copa Campeones de América , in which Nacional had to hand over the trophy to the Argentinian representative Independiente . In 1966 he played for the Rampla Juniors . He then went abroad, where he initially joined the Argentine clubs Platense (1967) and Banfield (1967 to 1969). In 1971 Álvarez worked for the Colombian club Atlético Junior . In 1972 he played in Ecuador for LDU Quito . At the end of his career, which he had already ended in the meantime, he was still under contract with Veracruz in Mexico in 1976 and 1977 after being reactivated by the local trainer Prof. De León . There he completed 23 games in the top division . Fénix is also mentioned as another club in the course of his career .
National team
Álvarez was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed six international matches between May 30, 1962 and June 26, 1966. He did not score an international goal. With the Celeste he took part in the 1962 World Cup. There he was used in all three group matches . In the encounter against the Soviet selection he broke his fibula in the first half, but refused to be taken to hospital. As a result, he was nevertheless able to be operated on successfully. Since there were no changes at the time, he continued to play standing as the left attacker until the final whistle. At the 1966 World Cup he was also in the Uruguayan squad . However, he did not play a game there.
