Oskar Borcherdt

Oskar Borcherdt ( October 18, 1854 in Braunschweig - January 14, 1932 in Leipzig ) was a German theater actor and director .

Life

Borcherdt, son of a finance secretary for the Braunschweigische Staatsbahnen, was supposed to become a businessman and completed a three-year apprenticeship as a wholesaler in Braunschweig.

He then took lessons from Anton Hiltl and became a member of the Braunschweiger Hoftheater on October 1, 1872 as an apprentice.

A year later he went to Neu-Strelitz, then to Mainz and from 1877 to 1878 to Freiburg (where he also headed the artistic direction). Engagements in Cologne, at the Stadttheater Wien, Breslau, Kassel and Königsberg followed.

In 1884 he went to Leipzig, where he stayed until 1902. That year he was committed to Cologne. From 1909 to 1914 he was director of the court theater in Gera.

Oskar Borcherdt, whose star roles included King Lear, Wallenstein, Richard III, Nathan the Wise and Macbeth, was married to the actress Anna Hänseler .
