Renato Usatîi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Renato Usatîi (* 1978 in Făleşti , Moldovan SSR ; Russian Ренато Усатый / Renato Ussaty ) is a Moldovan businessman and politician of the Partidul Nostru party . He heads the company WPT-NN based in Nizhny Novgorod , which operates in the railway sector. In the course of the local elections in June 2015, Usatîi was elected mayor of Bălți , the second largest city of Moldova, with around 72 percent of the vote .

Life

Renato Usatîi was born in northern Moldova, his father Georgi was an English professor. The young Renato won first place in the Moldovan English Olympiad in 1994 and later graduated from Bălți State University .

From 2000 to 2001 Usatîi worked as a supervisory officer at Chișinău Airport . In 2002 he took a job as an engineer with the Moldovan Railway , before emigrating to Nizhny Novgorod in Russia in 2005 . There he took over the management of the company WPT-NN, which manufactures metallic components and tools for trains and railways. Through this activity he has a high fortune. In his Moldovan homeland he worked as a philanthropist and donated large sums of money to schools, churches and sports projects.

From the beginning of 2014 Usatîi became active in Moldovan politics. He represents pro-Russian and Euro-critical positions and states that he wants to take action against corruption in the country. The incumbent pro-European parties PLDM and PDM in particular are said to be firmly in the hands of oligarchs . Usatîi took over the leadership of the Partidul Popular Republican party , which had been headed by Nicolae Andronic until then , and renamed it “Partidul Nostru - Наша Партия”. A Moldovan court declared this move invalid in June 2014.

Thereupon he founded his own party, the establishment of which, however, was again declared invalid by a court in September 2014. As a result, Usatîi announced on September 30, 2014 that he would run for the Patria party in the country's upcoming parliamentary elections , which had been led by the former Moldovan ambassador to Romania, Emilian Ciobu .

In the course of 2014, Usatîi's popularity rose by leaps and bounds, in surveys it was sometimes well over 15%, in the media it was sometimes treated as a phenomenon . With pompous election campaign events with live concerts, he succeeded in addressing young voters in particular. Usatîi's success put the continued existence of the incumbent pro-European coalition at risk.

The Moldovan Court of Appeal excluded Usatîi's Patria party from parliamentary elections on November 27, 2014, less than three days before the election. Members of Usatîi's party were arrested.

Patria is said to have received donations of 400,000 euros from Russia. Usatîi suspected a political motive and appealed against it, which was definitely rejected the day before the election. Other parties had also been shown to have received undeclared campaign donations, but had not been legally prosecuted.

The head of the EU delegation in the Republic of Moldova, Pirkka Tapiola , was “concerned” about the exclusion, as was the American embassy in Chișinău , and the German Bundestag member Andrej Hunko called this decision “incompatible with democratic standards”.

After the election, the chairman of the Moldovan Constitutional Court stated that the electoral exclusion had been carried out "hastily". Usatîi is now chairman of the Partidul Nostru party .

Usatîi is married and has two daughters.

In the 2015 local elections, Usatîi ran as a candidate for mayor in Bălți, the country's second largest city. He received 72.5% of the vote and has been in office since July 2, 2015.

In September 2015, the mass protests against the policies of the Moldovan government began, in which the pro-European and pro-Russian political forces participated separately. As chairman of the pro-Russian Partidul Nostru, Usatîi demanded the resignation of the president, the prosecutor general, the heads of the Moldovan national bank and the central electoral commission.

In January 2016, the General Prosecutor's Office of Moldova opened criminal proceedings against Usatîi for threatening state officials during the mass protests. The procedure was initiated by Nicolae Timofti , the then President of the country.
