Oskar Widman (born January 2, 1852 in Uppsala , † August 26, 1930 ) was a Swedish chemist and university professor.

Life

Widman studied chemistry in Uppsala, received his doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of Uppsala University in 1877 and worked from 1879 to 1880 with Adolf von Baeyer in Munich . In 1885 he became professor of analytical chemistry at Uppsala University, from 1905 to 1917 as a full professor . From 1910 to 1916 Widman was vice rector of the university. Widman was a member of the Nobel Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy for the field of chemistry from 1900 to 1928. In
1888, rules for the nomenclature of heterocyclic compounds were established by Oskar Widman. Shortly before that, Arthur Hantzsch had already dealt with this topic independently. This work resulted in the Hantzsch-Widman system for naming heterocycles, which is still in use today and has also been part of the IUPAC nomenclature since 1957 .
His research activities focused on aromatic compounds, such as B. the usnic acid or isopropylbenzene derivatives ( cymene , thymol ).
