Osmium (III) chloride is an inorganic chemical compound of osmium from the group of chlorides .

Extraction and presentation

Osmium (III) chloride is formed during the chlorination of osmium at higher temperatures and when the vapors cool down rapidly, whereby osmium (IV) chloride is also formed. It is obtained in pure form by decomposing ammonium hexachlorosmate (NH 4 ) 2 (OsCl 6 ) in a stream of chlorine.

properties

Osmium (III) chloride is a brown-black, hygroscopic powder that is easily soluble in water. Its hydrate is a black solid.

The disproportionation at 500 ° C in vacuo results in osmium (IV) chloride and osmium (II) chloride .

use

Osmium (III) chloride hydrate is used as a starting material for the production of dichlorodihydride osmium complex compounds and other compounds.
