The Osnabrücker Turnerbund von 1876 eV (OTB) is one of the oldest and largest sports clubs in the city of Osnabrück . With around 2,600 members in around 15 departments, it is primarily geared towards popular, health and disabled sports. The OTB has several sports halls at Oberen Martinistraße 50 for all ball sports, fitness and health sports, ballet, dance sports, martial arts and athletics.

history

The Osnabrücker Turnerbund was founded on September 4th, 1876 by 29 craftsmen. Initially, a converted horse stable served as a gym. In 1877 he entered the German gymnastics club and in 1882 they moved to the main city gymnasium on the castle wall . A first youth department was founded in 1900 and the women's department in 1909. A clubhouse was also built on Schnatgang in 1908. In 1920 a games and sports department was founded. From 1924, the association temporarily published a club newspaper. In 1945, during the Second World War , the gym on Schnatgang burned down due to air raids . After the war, a table tennis and handball department (1947) and the athletics department (1948) were established. A new sports facility was inaugurated on upper Martinistraße in 1962. In 1974 the play and sports kindergarten and a swimming pool were added there. The judo department was founded in 1976. In 2006 another ball sports hall was built. In 2015, the OTB-Athleticum with its power, course and administration rooms was added.

OTB-Athleticum

There is a modern fitness studio on the ground floor, which is complemented by two large, bright classrooms on the first floor. The courses on offer range from cardiovascular training, weight loss training ("fat burner") to aerobics and step courses and workout courses. Cross and functional training is offered as well as yoga and Pilates courses.

basketball

The basketball department of the OTB is called "Titans". The first women's team of the club last played in the 2nd Bundesliga , here it came to the city duel with the GiroLive Panthers Osnabrück of the Osnabrück sports club. In 2018 the two clubs decided to cooperate in the field of basketball in the long term. Because of this, the Titans withdrew their women's team from the 2nd Bundesliga after the end of the 2017/18 season. The OTB wants to concentrate more on the men's area with the first team in the 2nd regional league, while the OSC will continue to organize its women's area professionally. The cooperation should also concern the promotion of young talent, e.g. B. through joint youth teams.

Judo

The women's teams of the OTB were successful for years under the direction of department head Heinz Reisige in the Judo Bundesliga , most recently in a competitive community with Stella Bevergern . The German championship title was won four times. The first women's team disbanded in 2017.

Particularly successful judoka of the OTB are:

  • Nicole Hehemann : 2 × WM gold, 1 × WM silver, 1 × WM bronze, 1 × EM gold, 2 × EM silver, multiple DM gold ( sumo and judo )
  • Nicole Niemeyer: 1 × World Championship silver, 1 × World Championship bronze ( Judo )

Sports facilities

The majority of the sports courses take place in the club's own buildings at Oberen Martinistraße 50 in Osnabrück. Directly behind the main building there are several soccer fields (real and artificial turf), tennis courts, a 400 m tartan track , high and long jump devices , beach volleyball courts , etc. These are mostly floodlit and some have grandstands with roofed over Seating. Furthermore, there are numerous opportunities for running sports in the Natruper Holz and Rubbenbruchsee areas just a few hundred meters away.

In the main building there is a large sports hall with a grandstand, a judo hall, a karate hall, a rhythm hall, a gymnastics hall, the OTB-Athleticum, the children's exercise center, gastronomy with bar, table and beer garden areas, administration and a sauna . The four-group play and sports kindergarten has been located in the adjoining building since 1974. Since 2007 the OTB has owned the children's exercise center “Kinderwelt”. It teaches children between the ages of zero and twelve a wide range of exercise concepts.

Known visitors

  • On November 16 In 1980, Pope John Paul II . Osnabrück and held a service in front of 140,000 people on the football field at the Illoshöhe.
  • The former Federal President and Prime Minister of Lower Saxony Christian Wulff was a multiple visitor to the OTB.
  • Cardinal Meisner as Bishop of Berlin (later Archbishop of Cologne).
