Ossoliński is the name of an important Polish noble family. The feminine form of the name is Ossolińska .

history

The Ossoliński first appear at the beginning of the 14th century. The founder of the family was Jan z Ossolina , son of Nawoja z Tęczyna , Grand Marshal of the Crown and Castellan of Cracow. He named himself after his estate Ossolin (Gmina Klimontów municipality in the Sandomierski powiat ). The family carries the Topór coat of arms.

The Crown Grand Chancellor Jerzy Ossoliński was raised to the hereditary prince status by Pope Urban VIII in 1633 and thus rose to the high nobility . Emperor Ferdinand II confirmed to him in 1634 the imperial prince status. Jerzy's cousin Franciszek Maksymilian Ossoliński received the French prince status from King Louis XV in 1736 . Both titles became extinct when the line died out in 1790. The Count's line is still in bloom.

Jerzy Ossoliński had the later Brühl Palace built in Warsaw from 1639 to 1642 . From 1627 to 1644, Jerzy's brother Krzysztof Ossoliński (1587–1645) had the Krzyżtopór Castle built. In 1763 the castle in Rudka ( Powiat Bielski (Podlachien) ) was built. Joseph Maximilian Ossolinski (1748–1826) founded the Ossolineum in Lemberg in 1817 from the remains of Jerzy's library .
