The Osterdorfer Lochs are a field of sinkholes northwest of Osterdorf , a district of Pappenheim in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . The Osterdorf holes are listed under the number K 8 in the Franconian Alb cave register .

The approximately eighty depressions, also known as hell funnels , devil's holes or water snakes , are registered as Höllentrichter NW von Osterdorf at the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as a geotope under number 577G005. One attempt to explain the sinkhole field is the Urmain , which transported large volumes of water through the region in the tertiary period . More likely, however, is the assumption that the holes were a mine field for white ore . Through the almost circular and up to 10 meters (depending on the source, 20 meters) deep holes in the ground , water seeps away without filtering through sand or gravel , which is why they pose a threat to the groundwater . They are classified as valuable in geoscientific terms. See also the list of geotopes in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district .
