Oswald's Temple

Oswald's Temple , also known as Auchincruive Teahouse , is a folly near the Scottish town of Auchincruive in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, Oswald's Temple, together with Oswald Hall and other outer buildings of the manor house, form a category A monument ensemble.

history

In 1374, the Clan Wallace owned the Auchincruive estate of the Cathcarts. A tower house of unknown year of construction was first mentioned at this location in 1532. James Murray , who had acquired Auchincruive in 1758, sold the property to the merchant Richard Oswald . This commissioned Robert Adam with the planning of Oswald Hall, which was probably built on the site of the Tower House. It was completed in 1767. Oswald's Temple, also designed by Robert Adam, was built in 1778. It was built as part of the design of the parks and gardens. In 2003 the structure was added to the register of endangered listed structures in Scotland. In addition to the vacancy, mining damage is primarily responsible for the condition. The last time in 2011 the condition was classified as very poor with a high risk to the building fabric.

description

The Oswald's Temple tea house is isolated around 600 m northwest of Oswald Hall. When designing the design, Adam obviously took inspiration from the mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna , which he had previously visited. It is a two-story rotunda, designed with battlements and pseudo-reinforced. The folly is symmetrically designed with four arched portals and four tourelles . The set back upper floor, which was used as a tea house, is designed with twelve arched openings. Muntin windows are installed in every third , while the rest are blind. The building closes with a slate-covered conical roof .
