Herzog wrote on general art theory , referring a lot to his own expressionist-cubist work. For his art he invented the term abstract expressionism . Figuration and expressive representations of his figures sometimes reach abstraction and are cubist, similar to the works of Rudolf Belling , Alexander Archipenko or William Wauer . The surfaces of his sculptures are smoothed and almost always patinated . Herzog writes: The rhythmic standard lies within the polarity of large and small, strong and weak, rest and movement. The whole wealth of forms of nature lies between these poles and flows into the multifaceted life, into becoming and passing away.
