Oswald Römer (born May 11, 1938 in Berghausen ; † June 27, 1998 in Schwarzenau ) was a German draftsman , animal and landscape painter .

Live and act

Oswald Römer was born on May 11, 1938 as the eldest son of August and Emmi Römer. Busch, born in Berghausen, Wittgenstein district. As a child and youth he made drawings and first oil paintings of local game. He soon received professional support: The animal painter Renz Waller from Mettmann, who was evacuated during the Second World War because of the Allied air raids, lived in his birthplace . Römer was inspired by the motifs of the hunt and for hunting depictions in Waller's painting and drawing technique.

After primary school in his hometown and a three-year apprenticeship as a painter and house painter from 1954 in Berleburg, he moved to Cologne in 1957 , where he worked as a designer for wallpapers and fabrics. As early as 1959 he ran a wallpaper design studio in Cologne and designed numerous landscape and natural wallpapers.

After obtaining his hunting license , he combined hunting ambitions with his artistic passion. Stalking and sitting , observing the game in wind and weather, the changing moods of the seasons, Romans faithfully reproduced in a large number of paintings and drawings. His view of the anatomy of animals and their behavior enabled him to translate his observations into a personal artistic representation. After 25 years in his learned profession, he gave up his studio and ventured into artistic independence. In 1984 Römer bought an old farmhouse in Schwarzenau and moved back to Bad Berleburg a year later . In Schwarzenau's Upper Hüttental he renovated his half-timbered house and set up his studio there. After that, he devoted himself exclusively to animal and hunting painting, including a variety of realistic portraits of people, and the hunt itself.

His life's work was documented in the illustrated book Meine Bilder, published in 1995 , to which the animal filmmaker and television presenter Heinz Sielmann wrote a two-page introduction.
