geography
The river rises on the western flank of the 1,011 m high Te Waiti Hill in the Urutawa Conservation Area , flows in a right curve to the north and borders the city of Opotiki from the west and north, and then on the western side of the city about 2 km in front of the Coast to flow into the Waioeka River. The Otara River drains an area of 350 km 2 .
use
In the alluvial land of the river, the Opotiki Flats , the water of the river is used to irrigate the fields and around the city of Opotiki the quite clear water is ideal for swimming. Fishing is possible in the entire course of the river. In order to avoid flooding, the river was diked .
