Life

Othmar Schauberger made his first cave visit in 1919 while exploring the Gassel stalactite cave near Ebensee . With the decree of July 16, 1920, the State Office for Agriculture and Forestry commissioned him to explore and research caves containing phosphates in the Salzkammergut, which he carried out between 1921 and 1925 ( see also: Austrian Cave Fertilizer Campaign ). In 1921 he became a correspondent for the Federal Cave Commission and a member of the Speleological Society .

During his studies at the Montan University Leoben and his later professional activity as a mining engineer in Austria's salt mines, he devoted himself to researching the karst landscapes of the Trauntal Alps , the Dachstein and the Dead Mountains . On August 12, 1934 he reached the lowest point of the Eisriesenwelt in the Tennengebirge ("Schauberger-Grund") during a research with the State Association for Speleology in Salzburg .

In 1936, together with like-minded miners, he founded the Alt-Aussee cave research association, from which the present-day association for caving in Upper Styria emerged .

During the Second World War he used his military mission in Norway to explore caves there. After the end of the war, on behalf of the Federal Monuments Office and the Austrian Federal Forests , he prepared several mining geological reports for the new construction and restoration of the pathways in the Dachstein giant ice cave and the Koppenbrüller cave .

As a member of the Federal Cave Commission, he compiled a cave directory for the entire Salzkammergut in 1953/1954 .
