Shiina Rinzō ( Japanese 椎 名 麟 三 ; * October 1, 1911 in Sōsamuranouchishosha, Shikama County (today: Shosha-Higashisaka, Himeji ), Hyōgo Prefecture ; † March 28, 1973 in Setagaya-ku in Tōkyō Prefecture ) was a Japanese novelist , who was influenced by existentialism . His real name was Ōtsubo Noboru ( 大坪 昇 ).

Life

Shiina Rinzō was born in the village of Sōsamuranouchishosha (now Higashisaka in Himeji ) in Shikama County as the eldest son of the police officer Ōtsubo Kumaji and his wife Misuno. As a result of the circumstances, the household became impoverished, whereupon Shiina Rinzō ran away from home at the age of 14.

The western high school in Himeji today

Shiina dropped out of Himeji Middle School (now Himeji Western High School) prematurely. He worked in fruit shops, as a food delivery person, as a trained cook and in similar positions, often changing jobs. While he worked as a conductor in the electricity company Ujigawa Denki (today San'yō Denki Tetsudō ), he joined the Communist Party of Japan . In 1931 Shiina was arrested by the Tokubetsu Kōtō Keisatsu and sentenced in 1933 to three years in prison. In prison he took Nietzsche's Ecce homo as an opportunity to change his ideas. Shiina decided to turn to literature.

In 1947 his first play The Midnight Banquet ( 深夜 の 酒宴 , Shin'ya no shuen ) premiered. After reading the works of Dostoevsky , Shiina became interested in Jesus Christ . He was baptized as a Christian in 1950 by the philosopher Akaiwa Sakae (1903–66). As a result, Shiina worked as a Christian writer. He died on March 28, 1973 at the age of 61.
